CN Local 102 is heading back toward Flat Rock under the old arches on the DT&I in Allen Park after working the interchange with NS at Oakwood Yard. The arches date back to the 1920s when Henry Ford owned the DT&I, and were part of the failed project to have this line electrified. The concrete posts are still here but this line only sees local traffic now between Dearborn and Flat Rock. |

The crew of the 4924 is switching the Clearwater paper mill in Neenah, WI. Atb this point, the engine has cut off it's train and is backing a spur which will take them through one of Clearwater's buildings to gain access to another building that has the spots for railroad cars to be loaded/unloaded. A set of light CN units can be seen to the rear along with a stack train waiting in the hole. Eggers Industries (a door manufacturer) is the industry to the right of the scene. |

Once the mill opens the door, the unit will move in to pick up four boxcars from within. The train will then run the cars back to the small industrial servicing yard, drop them off, and take more cars to the mill to replace them. |

CN local pulls 4 cars westward through the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 24 Mar. '14. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously. |

Description: |
CN local passes behind Whiting Paper Co., 100 River St., Menasha, WI, via the remnants of the former C&NW mainline at Menasha, WI on 30 Apr. '14. They were pulling up to clear the turnout that will bring them back on the rails to the right. The remnants of a spur for Whiting Paper Co. are on the far right and the remnants of a spur for the idle Menasha Utilities plant are on the left. Originally the Whiting and Gilbert Paper mill, it was built along the canal on the site of an abandoned dry dock in 1882 (1881). It became the George A. Whiting Paper Mills in 1886, after he bought out the Gilbert brothers (who then founded a new paper company with their father and another brother). The name was changed to George A. Whiting Paper Co. in 1911. Much of the current facility was built after a devastating fire and explosion on 24 Aug. 1888. The 5th generation of the Whiting family sold the company to an employee in Mar. '14. The name was changed to Whiting Paper Co. The mill produced matte board, scrapbooking paper, high-end art paper, and its unique Kona Paper, made from recycled burlap coffee bean bags. The paper machines were shut down on 30 Mar. '16, after 134 years of providing quality paper products. When the closure was announced, it was claimed the company could not maintain the sales volume needed to remain profitable, which seems to be the catch phrase of every 21st Century American corporation when they shut down any historic industrial facility. |

GTW 4924 |
Description: |
A local approaches the Racine Street grade crossing in Menasha at mile post 2, from Neenah, on the Manitowoc Subdivision. Canadian National now owns this line that started as an original Wisconsin Central property. The line eventually went to Soo Line and then became a part of the modern Wisconsin Central until the CN bought them up. The Milwaukee Road (Milwaukee and Northern) ran parallel to these tracks in Menasha and granted the original WC/Soo Line trackage rights to Hilbert from the junction near the ends of their yards in Menasha. |
