FL 9 and a surprise
Title:  FL 9 and a surprise
Description:  An FL 9 led train rolls out of Harmon, not a big deal in those days. The surprise is the HEP car behind the power. This was the only time I ever saw one in New York. Take a look at the Harom engine tracks in the background. Lots of good stuff over there.

Yard goat
Title:  Yard goat
Description:  The Miami yard engine makes up a New York train as I arrive on the Silver Star. Note the Slumbercoach. They were a staple on the Florida trains and the New York-Chicago trains, and were a really economical way to get a bed, however small, instead of sleeping in a coach seat. As I recall, the extra charge was around $15.

Headed for the tunnel
Title:  Headed for the tunnel
Description:  The Ringling Bros circus train is about to enter the East River tunnel at Hunterspoint Av in Queens behind a trio of E60s, which just took over from three LIRR MP15ACs. The train will be turned over to Conrail once in Jersey, and spotted near the Lincoln Tunnel entrance. Tomorrow the equipment and animals will be taken through the tunnel to their show in Madison Square Garden. I am standing on the LIRR Hunterspoint Av station, MP 1 in the foreground is the distance from the Long Island City float bridges, now long abandoned. The subway train behind the Amtrak power is the No 7 Flushing-Times Square train, seen about to leave the elevated line is has been on since just after leaving Main St, and enter the tunnel to make its Hunterspoint Av stop, then Vernon-Jackson, then on into Manhattan. The cars date to 1963, just prior to the Worlds Fair.

We see it here at Hunterspoint Av on the LIRR as it heads into the East River tunnel.

Palmetto
Title:  Palmetto
Description:  The Palmetto had an early departure from New York, putting it in the DC area mid day. Here we see it in a panoramic view of the Alexandriia rail scene, passing the station that served, at one time, Southern. RF&P and C&O. Their freight traffic passed on the outside tracks, which it still does, though now NS and CSX. To the right, the newly built(at the time) Washington Metros King St station is in service.

Auto Train
Title:  Auto Train
Description:  One of the more interesting Amtrak operations was the Auto Train. They took over the failed train after Auto Train Corp went under. It was a chance to see Amtraks name on the side of freight equipment-they had a fleet of auto racks-and also some of Amtraks most unusual power, their fleet of GE P30CHs, known affectionately as "pooches." Heres a pair southbound out of Lorton.
