Not really Amtrak, but I dont have anywhere else it would fit. This is a shot of a streamlined LV Pacific at Bethlehem, I believe in the 1940s. It was given to me by a friend years ago. He has since passed on, and I do not have any more detail. The location is, however, obvious, as the Reading bridge can be seen in the background. |

Es on the Central |
Description: |
I rode the Niagara Rainbow to Schenectady, then served not by the station in use today, but by one Amtrak called Colonie-Schenectady, which was not near anything. After getting off, I was able to get a dark side shot of the train, led by the then typical pair of E's. |

Lake Shore |
Description: |
A three hour late Lake Shore Limited rolls into the Albany Renssalaer station behind an SDP40F/E 9B combination. I lived in NY City, which was electrified territory, and mostly saw FL 9s and electric motors, with an occasional E unit if I got to Harmon. The SDP40F was a treat, and this was the first one I had seen. The power was pulled here, probably so it could be serviced and sent back west. I dont recall what the train got-I think Es, though it could have been FL 9s, which sometimes ran to Albany. |

An E 8 on the ready track at Albany Renssalaer is shrouded in steam, not uncommon in this era. Steam heated cars were still the norm in this hand me down era of Amtrak, and it was really cold that day, so they were cranking the steam generators full tilt. |

The Niagara Rainbow was a long distance train, running from Grand Central to Detroit via the Canada Southern from Buffalo, a total of 676 miles. Es into the night |
Description: |
I rode the Broadway to Chicago in 1978. At the time, it was still on its traditional route from New York to Harrisburg via Zoo Tower in Philly, changing engines at Harrisburg. We had just completed the engine change, the Es now coupled up in place of GG 1 4932 which had brought the train in from New York. Now it was off into the Allegheny darkness as we tackled Horseshoe Curve and the moutain railroad that the ex Pennsy still was. We rounded Horseshoe around 2330, and got into Pitt around 0330. I was amazed at how much traffic there was on that line, everything from coal-lots of it-to general freight, to intermodal. Even in the chaos of Conrail start up, it was an amazing piece of railroading. |

First generation goodies |
Description: |
Were passing the Chicago engine facility just outside Union Station, where first generation power is holding sway. A pair of Es, a GP 7 from the PC Valpo train, and an SW 1 shop switcher dominate the scene, quite typical of the time. Note the building in the background, the Continental Paper Grading Co. I had no idea my teachers were sending my term papers here to get graded. I thought they did it all themselves :-) |

Transition |
Description: |
There were many transitions being made in railroading at this time in history. One that did not involve corporate intrigue was this one, seen on the Southwest Chief leaving Union Station. The car directly under me, with the roofline that starts low and ends high, is an ex Santa Fe car, designed to allow movement from low level equipment to the former Santa Fe hi level cars, which were prominent features of travel in the west in these pre Superliner times. |

Busy place |
Description: |
Amtrak 763 pushes the Southwest Chief into the station, as a Conrail SW works the Post Office. The SDP40Fs were common power on western trains, though they were being steadily replaced by F 40s. The SDP40Fs had problems on a couple of western roads, most notably SP, for tracking issues and derailments. The Santa Fe didnt seem to have these problems, however, and did not restrict them. ATSF had experience with this type power, as it had FP 45s on its passenger trains, and seemed to know how to run them without incident. |

Es, Fs and washboards |

Ready power |

A look at the ready tracks in New Haven shows a couple of units peculiar to the region. Motor pit |
Description: |
It was occasionally interesting to take a ride over to Sunnyside yard in Queens. Often there would be power parked within photo distance of one of the several street viaducts. Today I caught an Amtrak E 60. This view also shows the expanse of Sunnyside yard, at one time the largest passenger yard in the world. Note the ex PRR tower controlling yard trackage in the distance. |

Amtrak 249 |
Description: |
Amtrak leads train 364 the Blue Water Limited, into Michigan Citys other station on its way to Port Huron. At the time, there was no through train to Canada, so you had to get off at Port Huron and find your own way across the border. It could get interesting. |
