Album Info:After a pretty disappointing day around Indy back in the summer, Nick, Ethan, and I decided to give the state capital another try this Winter since INRD's SAHW was back to running a daylight schedule. To say that this was the complete opposite from the summer would be an understatement. Enjoy!

INRD 3806
Title:  INRD 3806
Description:  Nick was back in town for his yearly Winter visit to the area for family, which meant it was time once again for our yearly Winter Trip. Despite having a disaster of a train day in Indy back in July, we decided to give it another go for our Winter Trip as INRDs road freight south out of the city was back on a daytime schedule and would be utilizing what are the fairly new SD70Ms that were bought from PRLX (n/e Norfolk Southern) earlier in the year to replace the SD9043MACs. We decided to get an early start to see if we could possibly shoot INRDs daily turn job to CSXs Avon Yard which was now using SD40-2s regularly again. We headed straight for Senate Avenue Yard and right off the bat we could SAUT-1 pulling and pushing a cut of cars building the SAHW for later in the day with a sole geep. Facing the wrong way albiet, but a good start to the day nonetheless.

Description:  The train shoves under the Raymond Street overpass. It would come back out later in the day but this would be the final time we would see it.

INRD 4001
Title:  INRD 4001
Description:  We were beginning to get a bit skeptical on whether or not the Avon Turn was already out and about somewhere if not already in Avon. The only chatter coming from INRD was the yard job. However, there was a small cut of cars that had been left on the main just south of the yard. Obviously the SAHW wasnt going to be able to go anywhere as long as those cars were there. Sure enough, we then heard the yard job talking to another crew. Moments later an INRD van pulled up to Raymond Street and a train with a long cut of stacks pushed out of the yard. A pair of SD40-2s were on the head end, a clear sign that the Avon Turn was just getting ready to go. The train shoved back just far enough for us to get this nice reflection shot off of this small puddle at the crossing.

INRD 4001
Title:  INRD 4001
Description:  All the train had to do was pick up those cars left on the main and go, so we headed down to CP DALE where the Indy Belt (NYC) crosses over the former PRR to Louisville. The PRR side is still guarded by PLs, but the Belt is guarded by Conrail dwarfs, which are still pretty neat nonetheless. The train slowly made its way across the diamond bound for the mainline at CP IU.

CSX 892
Title:  CSX 892
Description:  While the Union Station parking garage provides for a pretty decent view of the tracks in downtown Indy, we decided that we wanted a different frame for the Avon Turn. We decided to head to the west side of the city to CP IJ where we could get the train coming around a slight S-Curve with the Indianapolis Steam Plant as a backdrop. While we were heading there, CSX I007 was rolling into town. Ethan isnt one to stop and shoot GEVOs, so Nick and I had to shoot the train through the trees that lined the street. Surprisingly, it kind of worked.

CSX 5261
Title:  CSX 5261
Description:  We arrived at CP IJ where we noticed we had a restricting for another westbound. We were hoping it was the Avon Turn, but in classic CSX fashion, it was another CSX train. M360 from Cincinnati to be exact.

Title:  INRD 4001
Description:  Several MOW workers were wanting track between IJ and IU, but thankfully we heard over the radio that IC wanted to get INRD to Avon first. That was good news for us, and sure enough, here came the train around the corner. A pretty nice frame to end this chase with!

CSX 4436
Title:  CSX 4436
Description:  Ethan and Nick had never shot the LIRC before, and they were on our list to do today as well as they usually come into Indianapolis on Fridays. We made our way back into downtown ready to head south to Columbus but as we turned the corner around Victory Field where the Indianapolis Indians play, we noticed another headlight for a westbound which was clearly a standard cab on the front. CSX Y134 was making its way to Avon Behind the INRD, featuring a 4400 series GP40-2 on the front solo. We got it with the steam plant as a backdrop once again. A nice cut of CNW coal cars were in the middle of the train. I would assume that they had been converted into MOW service, but Im not sure.

CSX 3463
Title:  CSX 3463
Description:  Unknown to us before we went down there, but LIRC was off on Friday to observe Christmas Day. Nick and Ethan got some still shots of the power while I opted out on taking any photos. After lunch at Freddys in Franklin we went back north to Victory Field to waste some time before SAHWs departure. Not long after our arrival, a massive, and I mean massive, M361 was departing Avon for Queensgate in Cincinnati. We grabbed it coming across the White River just down from the baseball field.

CSX 8137
Title:  CSX 8137
Description:  Right after M361 cleared, we heard CSX Y129 call clear of Hawthorne Yard Limits on the other side of town. CSX Y129 utilizes a section of the belt that passes a pair of former NYC Semaphores that have been replaced with G-Head style trilight signals. While they are fixed as absolutes for both IU and Hawthorne, the signals are a few of a small handful of original signals left in Indianapolis, and I had always wanted to shoot something going by them. We were on the other side of town however and were a bit afriad that we might not get there in time. Thankfully we did, and I finally got a train passing these super unique signals. Definitely my favorite catch of the day!

INRD 7010
Title:  INRD 7010
Description:  After Y129, it was time to get set up along the INRD to grab the SAHW heading south. We had planned on going to see the Nickel Plate Express Reindeer Run in the evening, so we decided not to stray outside of Indy. After debating on where to grab the train we decided on Railroad Avenue which parallels the tracks about 5 miles south of the throat of Senate Avenue Yard. Google Maps is always a great help in telling where trains are especially in densely populated areas with the traffic feature. It was clear that SAHW had pulled out of the yard and was blocking traffic near the yard, but there was no indication that it had come any further than that. It took a solid hour before the train finally showed up to where we were, all 5 EMD motors absolutely roaring with the longer than normal train in tow. Our only assumption is that they had to double up a few times given the length.

Title:  NPHR 4214 and NPHR 200
Description:  After SAHW, it was a race against time up to Noblesville to get to the 5:30 run of Nickel Plate Expresss 5:30 PM Reindeer Run to Arcadia and back. We made it about 15 minutes before departure time which allowed us to get some stills of the equipment and buy some apparel at the gift shop.

Description:  The 5:30 PM Reindeer Run is underway northbound crossing 196th Street north of Noblesville. On the head end of the northbound run was NKP 426, the SD9. I tried a pan shot at this location that did not work at all of it, so I opted to only post the rear end shot of the F unit.

Compared to the first time I saw this train a few years back with Dad, they have made giant improvements on how well decorated it is.
