CFE 3042
Title:  CFE 3042
Description:  For the past four years, I have been accompanying my Dad out to Dyersville, IA in the late Fall to attend the National Farm Toy Show. This year, with his new job, we had an opportunity to go to the summer show, which although it is much smaller, it gives us longer days to spend on train watching. This year, with a few whole days to blow before we had to be in Iowa, we decided we were going to go to the Illinois Railway Museum. This would be my first ever visit to the museum, and my dads first visit to the museum since the mid 90s. With the museum not opening until 10 AM CT, we started our day early to get a few trains in before heading to the museum. CF&E had a train lined in from SDI, so we made our best efforts to make that our first train of the day. By the time we made it into town, the train was already calling signals back on NS rails. With not a lot of options to head to, we decided on trying to photograph the train passing the former GE complex (now Electric Works), from the Fairfield Ave. overpass. NS has No Trespassing signs all over there, and it is a common place for public mischief to happen, and nine times out of ten there is always a FWPD officer sitting there. Sure enough, not even 5 minutes of being there, one came out of hiding. Thankfully, he allowed us to stay to get our photos, but he essentially told us never to come back here again. A pair of Geeps lead inbound CFE 23 from SDI today. With the recent acquisition of several Dash 8/9 locomotives from GE, I believe the 3042 is planned to be moved to another property. So, this might be the final shot I get of it. Its sister, 3041, is already off. I suppose well see what happens.

CFE 4035
Title:  CFE 4035
Description:  We decided that we wanted to make progress on getting into and through Chicago that way we wouldnt be pinned by train watching and end up never making it to the museum, so we decided not to follow any of the big railways and just follow US 30 up to Chicago. US 30 parallels the CFE pretty closely between Plymouth and Valparaiso. Sure enough as we were coming into Hamlet, CFE 03 was getting a proceed on the track warrant the crew from Warsaw was using. And not only that, but the only G&W painted Dash 8 on the roster was the leader. We moved into Hamlet and grabbed the train now doing track speed by the grain elevator. While it is a shame the standard cabs are gone, these Dash 8s sure do look awesome in that G&W orange. We made an attempt to try to get the train passing the distant PL at Hanna. But, I overjudged where the signal was and we ended up missing it there.

NS 8137
Title:  NS 8137
Description:  NS had a train lined east on the NKP, so we decided to head down to South Wanatah to grab it. NS 270 screams east out of town crossing the US 421 crossing. There was obviously a larger grain elevator here at one time, but the only thing left is a part of one of the silos.

NS 7114
Title:  NS 7114
Description:  I90 was the fastest way across Chicago to the museum according to the GPS. We still had about another hour to spare before the museum opened, however, and with plenty of NS traffic bumping around on the Chicago Line, we ended up stopping at Porter to see what we could get. As it turned out, we had missed a large hunk of the action, but there was still plenty of it to come, as all three railroads into town had trains on them. After meeting a westbound, NS B08 was given permission east out of the Porter Yard with a pair of NS GP60s. A large puddle from recent rainfall made for a nice opportunity for a reflection shot.

Title:  IDTX 4623
Description:  There was no stopping Amtrak, even if the train was still several miles away. After NS B08, AMTK 365, the Blue Water, was lined through town. And it really didnt take them all that long to get there. The normal pair of Charger engines are on the front and rear.

CTA 5321
Title:  CTA 5321
Description:  Once I90 turns from west to north accompanying I94 into the city, the interstate begins to follow the EL, pretty much all the way in and out of the city, which provides for plenty of opportunities to catch the subway cars in action. Car 5321 leads Train 814 south out of the city.

IC 1020 and IC 1021
Title:  IC 1020 and IC 1021
Description:  Once we made it into the city, traffic began to slow way down, despite being well past rush hour. However, that ended up being a very good thing, especially when deathstar black caught my eye. CN L535 was waiting for permission into the city with a pair of Deathstars, and thanks to the slow moving traffic, I was able to get a pretty clean shot of the train with the Chicago Skyline in the back. Awesome!

UP 4804
Title:  UP 4804
Description:  The museum was awesome! Lots of great old equipment to admire. We will definitely be making a visit back soon. With Janesville and the Wisconsin Southern on the brain for tomorrow, we would be staying the evening at the Hampton Inn on the east side of Rockford for the night. Rail action into Rockford is pretty sparse, only with UP, CP, and the IRM operating local moves in and out of the city on a fairly regular basis. Most of UPs traffic to the area comes off a nightly road train in and out of Belvidere, which just happened to be building for the outbound when we got into town. Tonights MBEBE is being built with the yard crew with a pair of SD70Ms. The MBEBE crew will come OD at 9 PM that evening to make its nightly journey to and from the city.

UP 4804 and UPY 705
Title:  UP 4804 and UPY 705
Description:  The yard crew finishes building the MBEBE as the yard job sits off to the left with a pair of GP15s. Due to the light action on this line, UP stores a good amount of autoracks and TOFC flats out here, which come and go about once or twice a week. Tonights MBEBE appears to be taking some autoracks back to the city. There might be some sort of mixing center around here somewhere but neither of us are familiar enough with the location to know for sure. By this time, with no other action happening, we decided to head for the hotel and check in. There wasnt much time left in the day so instead of heading south on I39 to Rochelle, we decided to stick a little closer to town and see if CP would send anything at Davis Jct. Unfortunately, the nearest train that would have passed was clear out at Savanna, and it would have been well after dark before it showed up there. So, with that, we decided to call it a day. We picked up Chick-Fil-A across the street for supper and turned in for the night. Next morning, Janesville was on the agenda!

WAMX 6023, WAMX 6031, WAMX 6029, and WAMX 5900
Title:  WAMX 6023, WAMX 6031, WAMX 6029, and WAMX 5900
Description:  It had been a long time since I had shot anything on the Wisconsin Southern, while my Dad had never shot anything on the Wisconsin Southern, so we were both excited to start our day along the railroad headquarters in Janesville. CP and UP were both supposed to run their transfer jobs to the WSOR that day as well, so we were expecting to get some pretty decent morning action. However, when we arrived, everything was quiet, but plenty of engines sitting around the shops. Just like G&W has been doing with the GEs, WAMX purchased a number of larger six axle locomotives, these being older SD60 variants from the UP. Some of them have been repainted, as can be seen with the triclops SD60M to the right, but some have not been, as can be seen by the units in the yard.

Description:  A closer shot of the repainted triclops, sitting with a triclops still in its UP yellow. One thing I will have to say; I like the new paint, but Im glad Watco didnt put too much patchwork on these units like LTE had done when G&W was thinking about going the EMD route. They still look pretty good.

WAMX 6022
Title:  WAMX 6022
Description:  We heard a warrant for WSOR T4 a while back. Soon enough, we heard them give up their warrant and contact the yard to bring their train in. We moved down a few streets to photograph the train by some interesting buildings. Little did we know, however, they were apparently going to do a power swap. They left their train behind on the Rock River bridge and ended up coming into the yard light. Another trio of SD60Ms were in charge of T4, one of the other repainted ones on the point.

Most of which have been combined with other trains. That ended up giving us enough time to check into the Comfort Inn in town where we would be staying for the evening. But, the action did pick back up soon after as UP CATWS rolled into town. This coal train is a good example of a PSR move; two trains combined into one. The head 100 cars were marked for WEPX, two more units in the middle, another 100 company coal cars, then a rear DPU. No day is a good day to run a double coal train.

UP 2583
Title:  UP 2583
Description:  UP 2583 brings up the rear of CATWS as the double coal train continues east toward Chicago. I assume the two trains will be split at Proviso and head their separate ways.

BNSF 8399
Title:  BNSF 8399
Description:  Finally the silence on BNSF was broken, as Z-CHCSSE6-30 rolled through town around the big curve west of the diamond.

BNSF 7678
Title:  BNSF 7678
Description:  A SD70ACe and a H2 GEVO bring up the rear of Z-CHCSSE6-30 as the train rolls out of Rochelle. The water tower now has a Silgan Plastics logo plastered onto it instead of the Kraft Logo. I believe Silgan occupies the building that Kraft was once in now.

UP 2660
Title:  UP 2660
Description:  We decided to move a little eastward to get out of Rochelle since BNSF had nothing anywhere close behind or ahead of the Z Train. Creston was an ideal spot to shoot some trains for the last few hours of the day. Unfortunately, UP MCHNP caught us before we could get into town. Thankfully, the out the window shot of the train passing the landfill ended up not being too bad.

UP 1995
Title:  UP 1995
Description:  While we had intended on moving out of Rochelle anyway for more train action, one of the main reasons we decided to move was because we wanted a good backdrop of UP MWGWG heading east back to West Chicago, as todays WGWG was featuring UP 1995, the Chicago and North Western Heritage Unit, on the front. The unit had been at IRM C&NW Days the weekend prior, and now had been bouncing between the MWGWG and the MBEBE. Sure enough, not long after the stack train, MWGWG came screaming east by the Creston grain elevator with a very clean UP 1995 on the head end! The last time I shot this unit was way back in 2012 in Nebraska, so it was neat to finally get to see it again, especially so clean! My Dad had seen it a bit more recently, as back in 2017 it lead a northbound on the NS through home while I was at school. Glad we both got to see it together on this trip!

WF Hall Printing 5
Title:  WF Hall Printing 5
Description:  Both railroads went dead after MWGWG so we headed back into Rochelle and grabbed some supper at Culvers. After taking it back to the room and eating, we decided to spend the remainder of the evening at the railroad park in town. WF Hall Printing 5 sits on display by one of the former C&NW signals that used to guard the diamond here.

NS 4327
Title:  NS 4327
Description:  Just as it looked like we werent going to get any trains to close the day out, UP MCBCH keyed up G3 and the dispatcher and told them they were ready to go east. Right at sunset, the train slowly rolled out of G3 with a solo NS AC44C6M on the front. NS is paying back quite a few power hours to the UP after they themselves leased a ton of UP locomotives back at the end of 2022 and into 2023. With that, our day came to an end. Another great day of railfanning! The following day will begin in Rochelle, and end in Dubuque.

UP 6555
Title:  UP 6555
Description:  The following morning we didnt get up quite as early, but we did start our day fairly early. After breakfast at the hotel, we were out the door and headed to the part. Almost right off the bat, UP sent MNPCH by, which we grabbed coming by the railroad park.
