Life in Hollidaysburg |
Description: |
Once famous for the massive PRR/PC/Conrail car shops, Hollidaysburg is much quieter now. The shops are shut down except for a few smaller tenants, and miles of yard track are abandoned or used for long-term car storage during the recession. There is still a consignee, however; here the NS Cove Secondary turn from Altoona has come to town to serve the customer. The train is returning to Altoona and passing the old U.S. Hotel in Hollidaysburg. |

Working Clearfield Yard |
Description: |
A nice catch at the end of the day was RJC-2, a Clearfield-based RJ Corman crew, building a train for interchange in the former NYC yard in Clearfield. Once together, this train will travel the "WBV" line (West Branch Valley, former NYC trackage) down to the juction at Keating on the Buffalo Line, where the traffic will be handed off to NS. The ethanol plant is in the distance on the left of this frame. |

Hitting the Grade |
Description: |
The unique sound of SD80MAC's with their massive 20-cylinder EMD prime movers is on full display as C48 climbs the hill, northbound out of Windber. Deep snow accents the scene as the diesels work to lift*coal loads towards the PRR main line. |

A Sacred Site |
Description: |
NS C48 rolls though the location of the dam that burst on May 31, 1889, an event that c`used the Johnstown Flood. The profile of the dam is visible behind the lead locomotive. As a civil engineer, this site carries much darkness for me; this dam failure_resulted in 2,209 deaths, the largest civilian casualty count in the history of the United States to that point. The dam had been constructed safely by the State for a canal reservior, but was later abandoned and subsequently purchased by an exclusive hunting club. They did not properly maintain the dam. In fact, the club put screening across the spillways and safety outlets to ensure fish stayed in the lake behind the dam, but these also clogged with debris. After a huae rain storm, debris fully clogged the screen, and disaster followed. The lesson for fellow engineers: do not ever let profit or pleasure cloud a situation dealing with public safety. khe wealthy may not be used to hearing 'no' when it coles to their pastimes, but public safety must come first. |
