IC 9568
Title:  IC 9568
Description:  A CN local, with some unique, expedient hand-stenciling on the locomotive cab, crosses Washington St. after servicing Chemtrade (formerly General Chemical Corp.), 388 Ahnaip St., via former C&NW rails on Doty Island at Menasha, WI on 4 Jul. '19. It is difficult to imagine that then Washington Ave. was also Hwy. 41, until that highway was relocated to what was then the rural outskirts of the Fox Cities in the 1940s. U.S. Paper Mills Corp., 69 Washington St., Menasha, WI, an active rail customer, is visible in the background. This mill began production in 1891 as the John Strange Paper Co. It was purchased by Menasha Corp. in 1969 and renamed John Strange Paperboard Div. It was sold to U.S. Papers Corp. in 1981. It was sold to Sonoco ca. 2002.

IC 9568
Title:  IC 9568
Description:  A CN local approaches Milepost 1 and Garfield Ave. as it heads south via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 4 Jul. '19. The former Mondi Akrosil, LLC, facility, 206 Garfield Ave., is partially visible at right. Mondi moved the jobs to Pleasant Prairie, WI, circa '12. Originally Edgewater Paper Co., founded in 1917, which specialized in silicone coated release paper. It was purchased by Akrosil Corp., a holding company, in '69 but didn't change the name to Akrosil until Apr. '74. The Hammermill Paper Co. purchased Akrosil ca. '75, but apparently did not change the name. The facility operated as International Paper-Akrosil after International purchased Hammermill in '86. International sold some of its holdings, including this facility, to Kohlberg & Co., LLC, another holding company, in Jun. '05. Mondi Packaging, based in Vienna, Austria, purchased Akrosil in Jan. '06. There are remnants of a spur on the west side of the facility, but it has not received rail service for a long time. It appears to possibly be used for storage or warehousing.

IC 9568, CN 4711, CN 4705
Title:  IC 9568, CN 4711, CN 4705
Description:  A pair of CN locals face-off on the yard lead at the north end of the former SOO yard along Union St. at the former Adams St. grade crossing at Neenah, WI on 4 Jul. '19. Near local was waiting to return to the yard from Menasha and had one locomotive, IC 9568. Far local, throwing a little smoke, was preparing to cross over to the passing siding and head toward Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna, and had two locomotives, CN 4711 and CN 4705. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard (a few blocks to the south) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. I'm curious to learn what Washington did to piss off the "great" City of Neenah.

CN 5735, CN 5666, IC 9568
Title:  CN 5735, CN 5666, IC 9568
Description:  A CN through freight parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd./N. Lake St. and passes the approaches of the Roland Kampo Bridge (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) at the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 28 Jul. '19. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016). The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75, at the time it was simply a bridge to provide access to Hwy. 41 from Menasha. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange. It was recently reconstructed and expanded; the new, now full interchange was dedicated on 11 Jul. '18. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel to the right. W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. becomes N. Lake St. underneath the Polish Connection. Modern maps tend to omit the W. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign, some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W.

IC 9568
Title:  IC 9568
Description:  A CN local approaches Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via a remnant of the former C&NW main line (now relegated to a passing siding) at Neenah, WI on 28 Aug. '19. Local has just extracted several empty gondolas from Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 and is preparing to spot them on the nearby passing siding before spotting the loaded gondolas. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. The former SOO rails run parallel on this side of the train.

Title:  IC 9568
Description:  A CN local approaches De Pere St. (the current street signs have been lazily bastardized to Depere St.) as it heads west via former SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 2 Sep. '19. Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), 741 4th St., stands in the background. Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location at 422 Manitowoc St., on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO railroad tracks. It’s the same facility, but the addressed changed when a portion of Manitowoc St. was vacated to allow westward expansion ca. ’76-’80. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69, but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc., purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca. 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99.

IC 9568
Title:  IC 9568
Description:  A CN local prepares to service the Ahlstrom-Munksjö NA Specialty Solutions, LLC, Thilmany Mill via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Oct. '19. The paper mill was founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883. It became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in 1889, after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. It was acquired by Finland’s Ahlstrom-Munksjö on 10 Oct. ’18. The former C&NW bridge spans the Fox River in the foreground, it was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911. The mill's Rail King can be seen near the center of the photograph. Looking northeast from what was, until recently, Thilmany Rd. It appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter (at least there are not any street signs to indicate otherwise). Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the destruction of the majority of the original Thilmany complex and simultaneous restoration of the oldest part of that facility (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) in 2013 (out-of-frame to the left).

EJE 703, IC 9601, IC 9568
Title:  EJE 703, IC 9601, IC 9568
Description:  Looking south over the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard from the Winneconne Ave. overpass at Neenah, WI, on 18 Apr. '20. Locomotives include EJE 703, IC 9601, IC 9568. I wish I could photograph this scene without the handrail in the foreground, but the morons who designed this overpass (with the tacit approval of the morons who pretend to be the local government) only incorporated a sidewalk on one side of the bridge, the north side. There is no provision for bicycles to safely cross the overpass, except to use the unusually narrow sidewalk. However, the sidewalk is too narrow for bicycles and pedestrians to safely pass each other. Sure, bicyclists are legally entitled to use the roadway, but you will risk your life if you are foolish enough to exercise that legal right. The majority of motorists drive like idiots on Winneconne Ave. (as well as just about every other freeway, interstate, highway, county road, country road, back road, gravel road, dirt road, access road, public street, private street, driveway, pioneer trail, parking lot, and all-too-often sidewalk, in the United States). The Main St. overpass was ill-designed in the same manner. This ineptly designed overpass was constructed ca. 1988, so we will probably have to wait 20 years, or more, for an overpass with sufficient sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides.

IC 9568
Title:  IC 9568
Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. and approaches the Main St. overpass as it heads north at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20. The parking lot to the left of the train was the site of the WC (later SOO) depot, built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible above the locomotive's cab. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

In the background, beyond the north leg of the wye, lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. A large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill/park from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16.

Description:  A CN local traverses the west leg of the wye and passes the Main St. overpass as it heads northwest at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20.

IC 9568
Title:  IC 9568
Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 29 Aug. '20. Local had one locomotive, IC 9568, with some unique, expedient hand-stenciling. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.
