CO 4-6-4 #300 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Description:
Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in December of 1948 (serial #64135), the white sidewalls make it look sharper than most 4-6-4 Hudsons. A note on the back of the photo states "C&O L-2 #300 on radial track at Cincinnati Union Terminal Feb 13, 1953; 1:45PM (probably protection for diesels)." #300 had roller bearings on its side and main rods as well and was also unique in that it had Union Pacific style "elephant ear" smoke deflecters applied some time around 1948 but are not present by 1953 for this photo. It was one of only two C&O locomotives to recieve this modification. The L-2 was rated to pull a fifteen-car train at 90 mph (145 kph) on tangent level track. R.R. Malinoski photo

CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4 3000
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4 3000, date, location, and photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. Although the date and location are unknown to me, the locomotive appears to be recently retired in this photo. My best guess is the location is Galesburg, Illinois around April 1955.

CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4 3001
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4 3001 at Barstow, Illinois on August 31, 1958, Kodachrome by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. Obviously on a fantrip, this locomotive was built by Baldwin in 1930 (c/n 61446), one of 12 class S4 4-6-4 types the CB&Q received from Baldwin during that year (#'s 3000-3011). The CB&Q built one more S4 (# 3012) at their West Burlington, Iowa shops in 1935 using a boiler supplied by Baldwin. The Burlington thought highly of the S4's, five out of the 13 were donated to various cities on the system, this one was donated to the City of Ottumwa, Iowa a year after this trip.
