Was all of the help for this train because it was long? Or because it has to travel up and down so much elevation? Or maybe both

It's because of the elevation. UP usually runs their coal trains on the Joint Line with a 2+3 (or 2)+2 arrangement. BNSF on the other hand, usually ops for the 2+2 arrangement.
