Excursion. Here is an original photo that I took at the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, around four-thirty on 17 October 1965. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5898 and three more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are EP-22's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5898 was constructed in March of 1951. They're just departing the Station with the "Horseshoe Curve Excursion" ~ sponsored by the Lancaster Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society ~ after a crew change and are now returning to Lancaster after a very full day of railfanning. As of 4 July 2016, or 51 years later, engine #5898 ~ aged 65 ~ is still in active excursion service with the St. Louis, Iron Mountain, & Southern Railway at Jackson, Missouri! (#10 of 10) |
