This train probably came down the M&St.L from Hopkins (where there was a connection) to Merriam Jct. and turned east onto the old Omaha for the run to Shakopee, Savage, and Prior Lake.

Today, the "Soo Shakopee" runs from CP's St. Paul Yard and follows the Omaha Road from Chesnut St., crossing the 15 bridge near Lilydale, and following the Minnesota River through Burnsville, Savage, and Shakopee to serve the elevators in downtown Shakopee.

The Milwaukee had their own branch line (the old Hastings & Dakota) that ran from Hastings west through Lakeville, Savage, Prior Lake, Shakopee, Chaska, and up the hill to Cologne. This was the original CMStP&P mainline. The Benton Cutoff that ran from Southtown Yard through the Lake Street Grade Depression, St. Louis Park, Hopkins, Chanhassen, to Cologne was built later, like 1910-1915. The Benton Cutoff saved time for hauling westbound freight from Minneapolis instead of having to head down the Mendota line to access the H&D line there.

And thus, the H&D was downgraded to Branchline status and eventually abandoned altogether.
