c1900 From the back of the print: "Maine Central Engine #9 at Yard 8, Commercial St. Portland, Me." This 0-4-0 was a MEC Class 4-12. Cyl:16x24 w/ 52 inch drivers. Built by the Portland Works in 12/1887 builders number 571. This series of locomotives were renumbered in 1900, however this locomotive was the only one in the series which remained #9 before and after. It was scrapped in 1910. /DL |

Prior to Alco merger, the Pittsburgh Locomotive & Car Works built this cute 0-4-0 switcher in June 1893 (c/n 1444) originally for the Valley Railway of Ohio as #16, which went to the Cleveland Terminal & Valley as #16. In 1902 the Baltimore & Ohio acquired it, renumbered #37, class C11, and was caught by R.D. Patton as it sat in the Wilmington, DE, yard. Number 37 was scrapped in August 1945. |

Alco-Brooks built this 0-6-0 yard switcher in December of 1916 as Boston & Maine #444 (serial #56532, class G-11-b). In 1952, the loco was purchased from the Boston & Maine by Fletcher Granite for use at their West Chelmsford Massachusetts Quarry in June, 1952. In August, 1986, Fletcher Granite donated the locomotive the Chautauqua Fairgrounds in Dunkirk, New York where it has been ever since. Specs - 52" drivers, 185 psi boiler pressure, 20x26" cylinders, modest engine wt of 150,000 lb and modest tractive force of 32,200 lb. |

Great action shot of a 4-8-2 Mountain type steam locomotive roaring along a trestle bridge with a very long string of baggage and passenger cars. Originally built by Alco-Richmond in May of 1919 as Southern 4-8-2 Mountain type loco #1496. it was later renumbered as a Southern Rwy subsidiary, Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific #6496, although the tender still carried the Southern label. The loco was retired and presumedly scrapped in November of 1951 after nearly 32 years of service to the Southern and its subsidiary. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo unfortunately so approximates were used. |

MDiv. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred R. Kern that was taken in Mount Union, Pennsylvania, on 29 August 1953. According to Paul Carleton in his (1989) book entitled "Pennsy Steam: A To T" (page 10), "Next, a narrow-gauge oddity: An odd 6093. Pittsburgh built this little saddle tank kettle in 1906 for use on Pennsy's slim gauge track serving the company's railroad tie creosoting plant in Mount Union, Pa." ("Stoneborobranch"; #5 of 56) |
