USSX Slag Car #6 - US Steel |
| Description: |
This car reprresents the large number of slag cars that US Steel and other steel producers were use to haul molten slag (impurities) from blast furnaces in large, tilted metal pots (thimbles) to dumping sites or processing plants for use in cement. Molten slag was poured into a large, cone-shaped bowl (thimble) on the car; a compressed air system would then tilt the cradle to empty it. |

One of the most unusual cars and one often missing in railroad museums is a hot metal or slag car. This one was donated to the Lake Superior RR Museum from the US Steel, Duluth Works after the plant closed in the 1970's. This is a rare car and one I am very glad I had an opportunity to see! |
