Southern Pacific Transfer Run |
Description: |
Southern Pacific RSD12/DL702 locomotives 2958, 2964 and 2962 were on a transfer run at the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio’s CANAL YARD in New Orleans. Twenty-one of these units were built by Alco in 1961 for mainline work in California, using components from retired RSD5; but all were reassigned to less-demanding yard and transfer service at Houston and New Orleans in 1967, and they remained there until the last were retired in 1977. Title: |
SP RSD12 2962 |
Description: |
There was only one place where Southern Pacific Alco’s mingled with Gulf Mobile & Ohio geeps – the GM&O’s CANAL YARD in New Orleans. In this view, SP RSD12/DL702 2962 was with a pair of siblings on a transfer run from their AVONDALE YARD, while GM&O GP35 604 was one of three geeps that had come in on train No. 33 and – after some switching – they would return north on No. 32. Both of these locomotives rode on the trucks of old Alcos, those under the 2962 came from an RSD5 and those under the 604 from an FA1. Scenes like this disappeared the day of the IC-GM&O merger, less than a year away. (approximate date of photo) |
