Former-Smithfield Station |
| Description: |
The Smithfield Utah train station has found a new life in Logan Utah. The building was moved from its original location and rebuilt here on Logan's Main Street. The new owners then extended the building on the northern side to increase its size, and added a basement. This building is one of three preserved train stations in Logan (the other two being the OSL freight depot, and the current Cafe Sabor Restaurant). The Smithfield Station was a standard UP Hariman era design. Some websites erroneously claim this building was once the Cache Junction station, however local railfans attest to its origins in Smithfield. |

A large snowstorm last Saturday has been giving UP an operational headache on their Cache Valley Branch. Snow has pilled onto the tracks particularly at level crossings; where ice is freezing in-between the rails. As of this photo all track south of Lewiston Utah has been cleared of snow; while all track north from there to the terminus at Preston Idaho is still uncleaned. |

Since the local train entered the Cache Valley Branch on Tuesday; progress has been slow and the train has been running behind schedule. Normally the crew would begin their Thursday morning at their office in Logan Utah... However due to delays caused by snow the local train is found here at Lewiston Utah; parked on the spur leading to Presto Products. This photo was taken early morning, the crew hasnt arrived yet; although UP MoW trucks were spotted at the scene presumably for more snow removal work. |

While the spot I first visited now rests behind "No Trespassing" signs; I have found a new entrance that took me even closer trackside. When I first visited the signals in the area were old "target" signal lights' now they are all modern black hood signals probably installed in the effort to introduce PTC protection to Union Pacific's rails. |
