NOPB S8 50 |
Description: |
New Orleans Public Belt Baldwin S8 number 50 was running light and heading south along the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal, also known locally as the Industrial Canal. The 20-year-old locomotive had just crossed the Southern Railway's New Orleans Terminal Co. and was on the bridge over the Florida Avenue Canal, about to cross Florida Avenue. The smokestacks in the background were at the Lone Star Cement plant, a long-time landmark in this area. The 50 would be traded-in to EMD for new power and was scrapped in New Orleans later in 1971. B&HS Mixed Train |
Description: |
Bonhommie & Hattiesburg Southern SW1's 1 and 2, along with caboose 12, were parked at the railroad's freight house in Hattiesburg, waiting to depart on a mixed train from Beaumont, Mississippi. This was one of at least two such excursions operated for Chapters of the National Railway Historical Society in 1971-1972, before the little railroad disappeared into the Illinois Central Gulf. (Notice the people in the drop-end gondola on the other end of the caboose!) The two locomotives were originally Wabash 103 and 102, and had been purchased by the B&HS in October 1961 to replace the railroad's last two steam engines. (approximate day) |

After the discontinuance of the Southern Railway’s PELICAN in 1968, the railroad's locomotives were seldom seen at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal during daylight; but E8A 6908, along with the 2925, was photographed there during a brief strike in 1971, laying over for the SOUTHERN CRESCENT. The next year, all of the railroad’s E8 units would receive a green and imitation aluminum paint scheme. |

Passenger Power |
Description: |
Because of an impending strike on Saturday 24 July 1971, the westbound SUNSET and the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT had been annulled at New Orleans the previous day, which resulted in this unusual opportunity to photograph the power from both trains together. Both trains arrived in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, but the Southern train left early the next morning while the SUNSET departed at noon; so normally a shot like this would not have been possible. On the right are former Union Pacific E9A 947 (later AMTK 424), UP E88 927B (AMTK 370) and Southern Pacific SDP45 3207; while on the left were Southern E8A units 6908 and 2925. |

Southern Railway train No. 2 - the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT - was accelerating away from its station stop at Slidell, Louisiana behind E8A's 2928 and 6914. Many Southern E-units ran around like this in the 1960's, but by this time most of the few remaining E's had their lower opening covered up or had received nose doors without a light opening. There was only one place where Southern Pacific Alco’s mingled with Gulf Mobile & Ohio geeps – the GM&O’s CANAL YARD in New Orleans. In this view, SP RSD12/DL702 2962 was with a pair of siblings on a transfer run from their AVONDALE YARD, while GM&O GP35 604 was one of three geeps that had come in on train No. 33 and – after some switching – they would return north on No. 32. Both of these locomotives rode on the trucks of old Alcos, those under the 2962 came from an RSD5 and those under the 604 from an FA1. Scenes like this disappeared the day of the IC-GM&O merger, less than a year away. (approximate date of photo) |

Southern Pacific engineer John Batiste Nepveux was born in Saint Martinville, Louisiana on 21 June 1903 and went to work for the SP (Texas & New Orleans) in 1923. By the time Amtrak began in 1971 he was the regular engineer on the SUNSET between New Orleans and Lafayette. (Since the train only ran three times a week, he was the train’s ONLY regular engineer!) Here he was, standing next to former Union Pacific E8A 929 (Amtrak 326) prior to the train’s departure from New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal in October 1971. He retired on 20 June 1973, the day before his 70th birthday, with 50 years of service and passed away on 29 October 1979 at age 76. (approximate date of photo) |
