| Description: |
During the massive floods which inundated the midwestern U.S. in the summer of 1993, railroads detoured trains on an unprecedented scale, with the Santa Fe running about two dozen Chicago-California trains via New Orleans between 30 July and 8 August. ATSF S-LACH-2-24 was a low-priority intermodal train from Los Angeles to Chicago, and here it was at Alliance Avenue in Frellsen – on the western outskirts of New Orleans – in the midst of a leisurely 10-day trip via Dallas and the Kansas City Southern, New Orleans and the Norfolk Southern. At this location, S-LACH-2-24 was utilizing KCS trackage rights over the Illinois Central for the last seven miles of its journey from Dallas to the NS. The train had ATSF SD40-2 5189, SF30C 9523 and SF30C 9546 with 48 cars. |
